It’s there on every US coin and on the back of every cash note since July of 1955: “In God We Trust.” That phrase first appeared on US currency in 1864. Even as recently as 1954 that phrase also started to appear on US postage. When is the last time you even noticed that… or thought about it? I had to smile at a plaque that stated: “In God We Trust. All others pay cash.”
If every piece of money we have in our wallets or purses tells us to trust in God, should that mean something important to us? First, our currency proclaims that God is real and that He is the only God. Second, it proclaims that God alone can be trusted! Our money doesn’t proclaim that Allah or Brahma is real or to be trusted, or that certain pagan deities can be trusted, or that atheism is real or trustworthy. Even the phrase “higher power” can be a broad category that may or may not infer God.
Haven’t “Trust” issues been on full display in the news lately? Millions of Americans cast their presidential primary votes across our nation recently, and the results narrowed the field to only president Biden and past-president Trump. In just the last couple weeks, everything has been turned on its head. President Biden is no longer a candidate and past-president Trump came within one centimeter of death from an assassin’s bullet. Lack of Trust in regards current and future performance forced president Biden out of the race, and lack of Trust of the Secret Service regards president Trump’s protection forced its director Cheatle out of the agency.
Trust in our institutions, governments, public safety, and even our churches is being shaken as never before… and prophetically such things are just getting started. Alongside personal issues in life, all of this started to become overwhelming, but only until I laid all of it at the foot of Jesus, our Lord and God and savior. Then came peace, knowing that He is worthy of all our Trust, and
I was amazed how the tangle of things surrounding me started straightening out. Wow!
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight” Proverbs 3: 5-6.
“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust” Psalms 91: 1-2.
“Cause me to hear Your loving kindness in the morning, For in You do I trust; Cause me to know the way in which I should walk, For I lift up my soul to You” Psalms 143: 8-9.
“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, and whose hope is the Lord. For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, Which spreads out its roots by the river, And will not fear when heat comes; But its leaf will be green, and will not be anxious in the year of drought, Nor will cease from yielding fruit” Jeremiah 17: 7-8.
