The electronics inside a modern cell phone is a miracle of complexity and ingenuity, well beyond the average person’s ability to comprehend it. Functionally, all we users care about is pushing a few buttons or giving a couple voice commands, and our phones dutifully obey. It’s not our job to know how it works.
The same principles apply to the miracle of complexity and ingenuity of God’s creation, which again is well beyond the average person’s ability to comprehend it. One impressive example was when Jesus had compassion on the multitudes who followed Him into the wilderness. They were about to be sent back home hungry, but Jesus called His disciples to Him, and told them to feed the throngs of thousands with seven loaves of bread and a few little broiled fish. After the meal, 12 baskets of crumbs and leftovers were recovered. Jesus actually fed the multitudes two different times. Wow!
We all love this miracle story, and we can comprehend Jesus’ compassion, love, grace, and mercy upon those who followed Him. At the same time, this story reveals volumes more about how our God works behind the scenes:
1. Does God create things in this world that can appear much older than they really are? The baked bread and broiled fish were suddenly multiplied to feed the hungry thousands… and then some. Baked loaves of bread are made from grain that had to be planted in good soil, watered received sunshine, grown in the field for several months, harvested, dried, ground to powder, kneaded and mixed with yeast leaven, and then baked just right. The bread given to the thousands bypassed that entire process and was created on the spot instantly in huge volumes from nothing.
2. The same process applied to the broiled fish. Fish were spawned and grew in open waters for
several months or longer, were caught, fileted, broiled in a brine, and then dried on a rack. The
fish given to the thousands bypassed that entire process and was also created on the spot
instantly in huge volumes from nothing.
3. At the atomic level, this all gets really crazy. One of the natural laws of physics is that matter can neither be created nor destroyed, but only changed in form. However, during the feeding of the multitude, several hundreds of pounds of processed bread and fish suddenly came into
existence from nothing. How could science today deal with that? Also, the fish and grain both
were made from previously living organisms made from cells with DNA. That could never just
happen, right? The deeper you look, the crazier it gets.
Our knowledge regards building complex devices and systems like smart/cell phones is only child’s play to God. Creating complex human beings with the ability to love and to have freedom of choice to reflect that love back to God (who first loved us) is what God is excited about…and is waiting for… in you.
