Living a life of uncertainty and chaos, my question for us to ponder is – “Where can we turn for peace and security?” The book of Psalm 93, specifically verse 2, gives us a resounding answer:
"Your throne is established from of old; You are from everlasting." (Psalm 93:2, ESV)
This verse is a powerful reminder of God's eternal reign. In this verse, the Hebrew word for everlasting is me-o-lam, which conveys the idea of something infinite, enduring through all time. It suggests that God's sovereignty has no beginning or end—it is not just for today or tomorrow but for eternity. His authority was established long before the world was formed and will stand firm long after the world is gone.
In a world that often seems out of control, this truth is both a comfort and a call to trust God's unfailing rule.
God is in Charge of the World
One of the most encouraging aspects of this passage is the reminder that God is firmly in charge. His throne was "established from of old," meaning that He is not caught off guard by anything happening in our world. The forces of nature, political turbulence, or crises that seem to loom over us are not threats to His sovereignty. God is in control, no matter what.
Ellen G. White, in her writings, emphasized this truth when she said, “We have nothing to fear for the future except we shall forget the way the Lord has led us and His teachings in our past.”
This is a call to remember. When we look back at the ways God has faithfully led His people through trials and triumphs, it gives us confidence that He will continue to lead us – Our families and our Church not only in Sandy but our worldwide church, the Seventh-day Adventist. The key to overcoming fear and uncertainty is to remember that God, who has been faithful in the past, will be faithful now and in the future.
The Mighty Power of God over Chaos (Psalm 93:3-4)
The next verses in Psalm 93 illustrate the might of God’s power over the chaotic forces of nature. It says:
"The floods have lifted up, O Lord, the floods have lifted up their voice; the floods lift up their roaring. Mightier than the thunders of many waters, mightier than the waves of the sea, the Lord on high is mighty!" (Psalm 93:3-4, ESV)
The imagery here is striking. The psalmist describes turbulent waters—symbolizing chaos and unrest—and declares that God’s power is far greater than any storm or danger we face. In the ancient world, the sea and floods were often seen as symbols of chaos and the forces threatening to overthrow order. But God, the Creator of the seas and the storm is not threatened by them. His rule is unshakable.
This truth is powerfully demonstrated in the life of Jesus. When He and His disciples were caught in a storm on the Sea of Galilee, Jesus spoke to the wind and the waves, and they obeyed Him (Mark 4:39). His authority over nature is a living testimony that no storm, no matter how fierce, is beyond His control.
Focus on God's Kingship: He Brings Order
The central theme of Psalm 93 is God’s kingship. When everything seems spinning out of control, the psalmist reminds us that God is the great King who rules over all creation. Amid natural disasters, social upheavals, or personal struggles, we are called to trust in the unshakable sovereignty of God.
Ellen G. White wrote in the Review and Herald (May 6, 1902): "When the attention is fastened on the cross of Christ, the whole being is ennobled. The
knowledge of the Saviour’s love subdues the soul and lifts the mind above the things of time and sense. Let us learn to estimate all temporal things in the light that shines from the cross."
The cross of Christ is the ultimate sign of God’s sovereign rule over all creation. Through His death and resurrection, Jesus demonstrated that He is Lord even over death itself. As we fix our eyes on the cross, we are reminded that God has already conquered the most significant forces of chaos—sin, death, and the grave. This gives us hope that He will continue to reign supreme over the lesser storms we face in life.
We Are Pilgrims, But God Is Our Guide
Yes, we are reminded that this world is not our final home. We are pilgrims on a journey toward eternity. The apostle Paul reminds us in 1 Thessalonians 5:24, “The one who calls you is faithful, and He will do it!” This verse assures us that God is faithful in fulfilling His promises and will complete the work He has begun in us.
In the words of an ancient saying, often attributed to Jesus: “The world is a bridge. The wise man will pass over it but not build his house upon it.” The early Christian Fathers often spoke of believers as sojourners—people who recognize their faithful citizenship in heaven. We must focus on our eternal destination as we journey through this world.
A Call to Love and Encourage Each Other
As we travel together on this pilgrim journey, we are called to support and encourage one another. In Testimonies for the Church, Ellen G. White offers wise counsel on how we should treat one another:
"You will often meet with souls under the stress of temptation. You know not how severely Satan may be wrestling with them. Beware lest you discourage such souls and thus give the tempter an advantage. Whenever you see or hear something that needs to be corrected, seek the Lord for wisdom and grace, and by trying to be faithful, you may not be severe. It is always humiliating to
have one’s error pointed out. Do not make the experience more bitter by needless censure. Unkind criticism brings discouragement, making life sunless and unhappy. My brethren prevail by love rather than by severity."
In our journey together, let us not add to the burdens of others but rather lift each other with words of hope, love, and grace. We are not alone in this walk—we share a common destiny. Let us come together to build a united community focused on our mission. One day, we will all live together in the wonderful place that God has prepared for the righteous. I believe it will be a joyful and happy place, for God will wipe away every tear from our eyes, and there will be no
more pain or suffering.
Trust in God's Sovereignty
Today, as we face challenges, whether personal struggles or global/local crises, let us hold firmly to the truth of Psalm 93:2—God’s throne is established from everlasting. He is in control, and we have nothing to fear because of His unfailing love and power. As we journey through this borrowed life, let us remember that we are pilgrims with a sure destination that God has
prepared for the righteous – I am looking forward to being there soon, and I hope you are feeling the same way.
And until we arrive, let us encourage one another, live with hope, and trust in God’s faithful provision. As Paul assures us in 1 Thessalonians 5:24, "The one who calls you is faithful, and He will do it!"
Let us walk forward with confidence and trust, knowing that God’s sovereignty is unshakable and His love is everlasting.
